Khadija Said working at the Mkurumudzi Dam at Base Titanium

My internship at base titanium was unlike any other. I got the opportunity to apply my classroom knowledge into a true engineering experience and also had valuable time to conduct a research in the field of study. I was able to turn the knowledge gained during my internship into a skill set that will be beneficial in my future endeavors. Engineering is all about making a difference and I’m grateful that Base Titanium, through Ummah Initiative gave me the opportunity to do so.
Working with technical services on actual mining problems gave me a special insight on how I should conduct myself as an upcoming lady mining engineer. Not only did I experience fast paced technical work but also saw how methodical design is in mine planning. The first part of my internship was a two days vigorous safety induction by professionals in that field where I was trained on how to take 5 before doing any task, how to conduct a JSA and JSO and hazard identification so as appropriate measures are taken to avoid any danger for safety is the base way! I spent rest of the time
in the department of mining, technical service section where I learnt about survey, geology and mine planning. I learnt about the RTK GPS surveying technique which consist of a base station set on a known beacon (KWL38), one or several rovers for picking points or performing stake outs, data loggers
and a radio link I mastered the grade control techniques and mine planning using SURPAC GEMCOM software for various purposes like performing cut and fill to find the volume of HMC stockpile, block design et. The experience allowed me to learn more about the mining industry and also operate efficiently  in a fast paced environment.. I was also able to polish my skills in leveling using a dumpy level using rise and fall method for measuring the water level of Mkurumudzi dam. I would lastly like to advise my fellow students that it is never early to begin to develop yourself in the professional you
want to become. I encourage everyone to plan for your goals and aspirations, find a mentor and discuss your interest for they are valuable resources.
Above all stay true to yourself, have a purpose and direction in life, and keep your faith strong, thank you!
